This hot summer, an animated film called Nezha The Devil Comes Down once again ignited the blood in our hearts.
Let's start with the figures created by this film in just a few days: as of 12 noon on August 2, the box office of more than 1.5 billion in eight days of release, and the Douban score is 8.7 points. Cat's Eye Film predicts Nezha will eventually box office more than 2.7 billion yuan.
In the past, only Hollywood animation dominated the summer holiday schedule, and this achievement is not quiet.
Junlin pinpointed a calculation, from the "Monkey King: Hero is Back" has been a full four years, the eagerly awaited domestic animation next city, JunLin could not help but drum and call for the main creators.
In the film, Nezha subverts our traditional understanding, he was born as a magic pill, but firmly believes that "my life is by me not by heaven."
"Don't accept fate, be the master of your own destiny."
He rebelled against all fate. He rebelled against his own destiny.
When the film ended, the crowd erupted in cheers.
"Yes, that's what men do."
Yes, Ne Zha has got our blood boiling again.
When watching the film, Junlin's mind from time to time will flash a familiar and strange figure, an old man of 70, he is honored as "the godfather of China's semiconductor", he is called Zhang Rujing.
He left Sunsun Semiconductor, which he founded, two years ago. I haven't heard from him for a long time.
On July 29, an announcement of Hang Oxygen Shares brought back Zhang Rujing, who had been out of people's sight for a long time.
Hang Oxygen shares rose nearly 8 per cent on the day of the announcement.
Today, Jun Lin wants to use a cup of tea to talk with you about the "Nezha" of China's semiconductor industry - Zhang Rujing.
Perhaps you have not heard of this name, but I believe that if you read the following text with King's Landing, your admiration for him will be like a flowing river, just like King's Landing at that time.
1. "Factory builder" in the semiconductor industry
Ru-ching Chang, born in 1948 in Nanjing, moved to Taiwan with her family when she was a child, and graduated from Taiwan University with a major in machine engineering. He then went to the State University of New York and Southern Methodist University, where he received a Master of Science in engineering and a doctorate in electrical engineering, respectively.
After graduation, Zhang Rujing joined Texas Instruments as an engineer, responsible for the development of speech synthesizers for use by the Air Force.
Jun Lin found that the turning point of many cows' lives is often a small change inadvertently, such as the protagonist of this article.
Shortly after working, Zhang Rujing won the favor of Jack Kilby, one of the inventors of the Nobel Prize in physics and the inventor of the integrated circuit, and transferred to the core team of Texas Instruments - DRAM R & D and manufacturing team, and Jack worked together, for 20 years.
In these 20 years, the biggest thing that Zhang Rujing did was to engage in homosexual construction - to build a factory, to build a semiconductor factory.
Through his hands, the company has built more than 10 factories in the United States, Japan, Singapore, Taiwan, Italy and other places, which is extremely rare in the global semiconductor industry at that time.
With the emergence of semiconductor factories around the world, there are also the titles of "factory master" and "factory crazy".
However, the elder said well that while a person's struggle is important, we must also consider the course of history.
At that time, the DRAM market was dominated by Japanese companies, and it was difficult for European and American semiconductor companies to penetrate this field.
Texas Instruments DRAM was born at a bad time, after struggling to find a breakthrough, in 1997, Texas Instruments decided to cut all employees of the DRAM department, Zhang Rujing was unemployed, this year, he was 49 years old.
With a big pension in hand, you have reached the age of 49, the old Chinese saying is the age of knowing heaven's destiny. Most people would probably choose to retire.
But Ms Chang chose to return to Taiwan to start her own business.
If we say that the exercise of Texas Instruments is the stage of laying the foundation. At this point of knowing the destiny of heaven, his magnificent life began to set sail.
2, World Semiconductor - emerging
Now in retrospect, Zhang Rujing believes that it was a successful business.
After returning to Taiwan from the United States, Ru-Ching Chang founded the third local wafer foundry - World Semiconductor (hereinafter referred to as "World"). By the year 2000, the production capacity of the world University has exceeded the industry leader TSMC at that time one-third, TSMC has been developed for 13 years, and the progress of the World University only three years.
Shortly thereafter, it was rumored that TSMC would acquire the World University with $5 billion.
It was a perfect ending to Zhang Rujing's first entrepreneurial career.
Where there are people, there are rivers and lakes, and where there are rivers and lakes, there are rumors.
In some Jianghu legend, TSMC founder and chairman Chang Chang and the world's major shareholders conspired, while Chang Rujing was unprepared to launch a takeover of the world, and since then caused the two people for more than 10 years of discord.
Zhang Rujing has said many times that this is a rumor, and he believes that the clear will be clear.
However, to the mainland to build a factory has always been Zhang Rujing's wish, after the sale of the world, he set out.
3, SMIC - hardships, success
The Chinese have a devout preference for names. A few simple words, meaning an ideal, faith, good future, good prize.
Ms Chang moved to Shanghai to set up SMIC in 2000 at the age of 52.
In his reception room hung a pair of couplets "ZTE Huaxia Semiconductor, core global high-tech."
These twelve words may be the spiritual core of SMIC.
He did, and with astonishing speed, he turned SMIC, the industry's newest child, into the fastest rising semiconductor star.
In less than five years, Mr Chang led SMIC to build three eight-inch fabs in Shanghai, buy MOTOROLA's eight-inch factory in Tianjin and build a 12-inch fab in Beijing.
His dream is to build ten chip factories on the mainland.
Get a feel for SMIC's painting style:
The company started generating revenue from its main business in 2002, with revenues of $50 million that year. In 2003, that number jumped to $366 million.
In 2003, SMIC's revenue was 366 million US dollars, although the gap is still far from the industry leader, but as high as 6.3 times the annual revenue growth rate, making it the world's most amazing growth of wafer manufacturing companies.
In the first half of 2004, SMIC's revenues have reached $400m, surpassing its full-year 2003 results.
In March 2004, when it was listed in Hong Kong and the United States, according to IDC's research report, in the third quarter of 2004, SMIC's output value had surpassed Singapore's licensed semiconductor and became the world's third largest wafer foundry.
Smic is thriving, Zhang Rujing's fate once again took a turning point. Some say his fate is like a big movie. King's Landing wants to say it's better than a blockbuster.
Ms Chang left SMIC in 2009, five years after it became the world's third-largest foundry.
Here's how it happened:
In 2000, after World Semiconductor was acquired by TSMC, Chang led more than 300 people north to the mainland to establish the above-mentioned Shanghai SMIC.
For a time, Chang Ru-ching led the trend of Taiwan semiconductor engineers moving north to work on the mainland. Along with it, there is the rapid development of the semiconductor industry in the mainland.
However, the rapid development at that time also laid hidden dangers for the subsequent wave.
Between 2003 and 2006, TSMC sued SMIC twice, accusing it of infringing its technology patents and stealing trade secrets.
According to the memories of SMIC veterans, there are engineers who make mistakes, "the real mistake is the following engineers, they are really copying."
Zhang Rujing was appointed to rescue the crisis, but ultimately fruitless. In the winter of 2009, a US court ruled against SMIC.
In the end, SMIC and TSMC reached a settlement in which SMIC paid SMIC $200m in cash and a 10 per cent equity stake, as well as a condition that Ms Chang leave SMIC.
Today, there is still a story circulating about Chang Zhongmou scheming to force Zhang Rujing away. Perhaps only the two of them know the truth best. The mall is like a battlefield, and we just want to be a melon eater.
With the departure of Chang Rujing, TSMC also carefully arranged an exclusive competition agreement: from 2010, within three years, he can no longer engage in chip related work.
When you close the door, close the window.
At this time, Zhang Rujing was 62 years old.
When everyone thinks that Zhang Rujing has been in retirement since then, the naughty "Nezha" sword has taken the edge and entered the LED field, investing in three LED companies, covering LED upstream substrate materials, chips and downstream lighting applications.
This job is three years, because the competition period is three years.
At the end of the three-year period, Zhang Rujing returned to the semiconductor business and started a business.
This year, he was 66 years old.
4, new semiconductors - new, new
This time, he set up the first domestic 300mm large silicon chip (12 inches) project to undertake the main body - Shanghai Xinsheng Semiconductor Company.
Once again, Xinsheng has filled the gap in domestic large silicon wafers.
Take a look at the official website of Xinsheng Semiconductor with King's Landing:
Shanghai Xinsheng Semiconductor Technology Co., Ltd. was established in June 2014, located in Lingang heavy equipment zone, covering an area of 150 acres.
The first phase of Xinsheng Semiconductor is committed to the research and development of 300mm silicon single crystal growth, silicon wafer processing, epitaxial wafer preparation, silicon wafer analysis and testing and other silicon wafer industrial complete set of production processes in China. The construction of a production base for 300mm semiconductor silicon wafers and the realization of the localization of 300mm semiconductor silicon wafers fully meet the urgent requirements of China's large-scale integrated circuit industry for silicon substrate base materials.
Drive the whole industry to improve the product level, but also will drive the development of domestic silicon material supporting industry.
In the field of large silicon wafers, Xinsheng as an "ecosystem builder" is a very simple term.
After spending $2.3 billion in the first phase, the monthly production capacity of the new 12-inch silicon wafer has reached 150,000 pieces. After a total investment of 6.8 billion US dollars, Xinsheng is expected to eventually produce a complete set of silicon industrial mass production processes applicable to China's 40-28nm node 300mm silicon single crystal growth, silicon wafer processing, epitaxial wafer preparation, silicon wafer analysis and testing. Construction of the production base of 300 mm semiconductor silicon wafers to realize the localization of 300 mm semiconductor silicon wafers.
Another surprise to the outside world is that on June 30, 2017, after serving as the general manager of Xinsheng Semiconductor for three years, Chang Rujing once again left the company he founded.
When we asked him why he left again, he took it all very lightly, and it was natural that he did new ascension because there was no complete chip industry in the mainland at that time.
When the dawn of success was about to shine, he chose to leave again. Wipe off your clothes.
5. Xinen integrated circuit -- set sail again
Two years later, the old man stood on the coastline of Qingdao and set sail again to continue his dream in his heart.
In the face of the reality of China's lack of core and few people, Zhang Rujing, like an old Chinese medicine, takes the pulse and prescriptions for China's chip industry.
This time, the old man designed a new model for China's chip industry - CIDM.
CIDM
CIDM (Commune IDM) is a shared IDM (IDM: described below) company.
Look at the word Commune.
(1) As a verb: to have intimate conversation, to be in close contact.
(2) As a noun: community.
Close connections, community. These two words perfectly describe the C in CIDM.
If you can, King's Landing would like to call this model "China IDM".
Here, explain what "IDM" is and the nouns associated with IDM.
At present, there are several major production modes in the semiconductor world: Fabless mode, Foundry mode, and IDM mode.
(1) Fabless mode
Fabless, a combination of Fabrication and less, refers to an operation mode of integrated circuit design with "no manufacturing business and only focus on design". It is also used to refer to IC design companies that do not own chip manufacturing factories, and are often referred to as "fabless". No wafer means no chip manufacturing); Usually said IC design house (IC design company) is Fabless.
(2) Foundry model
Foundry, in the field of integrated circuits, refers to a manufacturer that specializes in the production and manufacture of chips.
In the semiconductor industry, Foundry is also known as "foundry." It is an operating mode of the semiconductor industry, specializing in semiconductor wafer manufacturing production, commissioned by other IC design companies, rather than engaging in their own design companies.
TSMC and UMC are the first and second wafer foundry companies in the world. Third place goes to SMIC above.
(3) IDM mode
At present, IDM is the main business model in the world. The semiconductor industry in the United States, Japan and Europe mainly adopts this model, and the typical IDM manufacturers are Intel, Samsung, TI (Texas Instruments), Toshiba, ST (stmicroelectronics) and so on. The business scope of IDM manufacturers covers IC design, IC manufacturing, packaging and testing, and even extends to downstream electronic terminals.
The main reason why IDM mode is leading is that it has the following advantages:
First of all, IDM enterprises have the advantage of internal integration of resources. Within IDM enterprises, the time required from IC design to complete IC manufacturing is relatively short, mainly because there is no Silicon Proven and no process docking issues, so the time from development to market of new products is relatively short. In the vertical division of labor mode, it is difficult for Fabless to dock with the Foundry process in time when developing new products, resulting in the completion of the flow sheet (wafer lithography process) of a chip from the design company to the foundry enterprise often takes 6-9 months, delaying the time of the product to market.
Secondly, IDM enterprises have higher profit margins. According to the "smile curve" principle, the most front-end product design, development and the most end of the brand, marketing has the highest profit margin, the middle of the manufacturing, packaging and testing links have lower profit margins.
Finally, IDM enterprises have technological advantages. Most IDM have their own IP (Intellectual Property, intellectual property) development department, after long-term research and development and accumulation, enterprise technology reserves are sufficient, technology development ability is strong, with technology leading advantages.
However, the investment required for a successful IDM enterprise is very large. On the one hand, IDM enterprises have their own manufacturing plants, which require a lot of construction costs. On the other hand, due to the increasing cost of IC process research and development, the cost of IC design has increased significantly. IC Insights data shows that the proportion of R&D expenses in sales revenue is increasing. Overall, IDM's capital expenditure
